We have evaluated the behavior of the ThorCon Molten Salt Reactor design during salt draining through the freeze valves. This includes neutronic simulations to evaluate the reactivity evolution at different salt levels and hydraulic analyses to evaluate the draining flow rate versus time. A full volume CFD simulation based on the two-phase (salt and gas) Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method is implemented.
